COT: The Murph honors Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, a Navy SEAL from Patchogue, New York. He was killed on June 28, 2005, in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings, when his four-man recon team was ambushed and surrounded by Taliban fighters in the Hindu Kush mountains. With his team pinned down and their radios failing in the terrain, Murphy moved into open, exposed ground to get a clear signal and call for a rescue, taking enemy fire while doing it. He completed the call and rejoined the fight before dying of his wounds. Only Marcus Luttrell survived (the story behind “Lone Survivor”). Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The “Murph” was his favorite workout, which is why we grind through it on Memorial Day. There were 6,398 suicides among veterans in 2023, the most recent year for which data is available, which works out to an average of 17.5 veteran suicides per day. That was actually a slight decrease from 2022, but the numbers have hovered above 6,000 per year since 2001.
